Firearm Safety Certificate Requirements

To legally purchase a firearm in California, you must possess a non-expired Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC), unless you qualify for an exemption, such as holding a California Concealed Carry Weapons Permit, DD214, or Military Credentials. If you need a FSC, you can obtain one by taking the FSC test. The test consists of 30 questions, with a pass threshold of missing no more than 7 questions, and it costs $25. We offer the FSC test in-store on a walk-in basis. Alternatively, we provide online classes that introduce you to California gun ownership, prepare you for the FSC test, and familiarize you with the purchasing process. Required Documentation for Firearm Purchase

To proceed with your firearm purchase in California, you must bring the following documents:

1. A California Real ID or Federal Limits Apply ID. If you possess a Federal Limits Apply ID, you must also present a second form of identification such as a birth certificate or passport.

2. Proof of residency, which may include governmental mail, a utility bill, or car registration.

3. Your valid Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC).

Completing the Purchase Process

After providing the required documentation, you will complete the dealer record of sale process. Please note that there is a mandatory 10-day waiting period, during which a background check will be conducted.
